This report describes accomplishment of development of a cathode processor calculation code to simulate the mass and heat transfer phenomena with the distillation process and development of an analytical model for cooling behavior of the pyrochemical process cell on personal computers. The pyrochemical process using molten salt electrorefining would introduce new technologies for new fuels of particle oxide, particle nitride and metallic fuels. The cathode processor calculation code with distillation process was developed. A code validation calculation has been conducted on the basis of the benchmark problem for natural convection in a square cavity. Results by using the present code agreed well for the velocity-temperature fields, the maximum velocity and its location with the benchmark solution published in a paper. The functions have been added to advance the reality in simulation and to increase the efficiency in utilization. The test run has been conducted using the code with the above modification for an axisymmetric enclosed vessel simulating a cathode processor, and the capability of the distillation process simulation with the code has been confirmed. An analytical model for cooling behavior of the pyrochemical process cell was developed. The analytical model was selected by comparing benchmark analysis with detailed analysis on engineering workstation. Flow and temperature distributions were confirmed by the result of steady state analysis. In the result of transient cooling analysis, an initial transient peak of temperature occurred at balanced heat condition in the steady-state analysis. Final gas temperature distribution was dependent on gas circulation flow in transient condition. Then there were different final gas temperature distributions on the basis of the result of steady-state analysis. This phenomenon has a potential for it's own metastable condition. Therefore it was necessary to design gas cooling flow pattern without ...

ln the conventional visualization system for the computational results, only Japanese (Nihongo) Line Printer (NLP) was available to print two dimensional cross sectional plots of vector and scalar fields. To evaluate the phenomena, an analyst had to print many plots on the NLP. This task makes difficult to check the computational results immediately after the calculation. Recently, as the visualization tools, we introduced Micro AVS and Field View which are utilized widely in the scientific and the industrial fields. ln order to show the numerical results on the visualization software, we constructed a post processing system which convert the results of the numerical code to "lntermediate files" which can be read by the visualization tools. As using this system, the examination of the numerical results can be executed on the display of the personal computer. Furthermore, the persuasive report and paper with high quality can be produced due to the color printing. As for the transient calculation, the change of the phenomena can be visually evaluated by using the animation function.

The database system named "Data Free Way (DFW)" has been constructed in collaboration with PNC, NRIM, JAERI and JST, and a lot of materials data have been stored in DFW with its improvements. Experimental and literature data on corrosion behaviors of ceramics and refractory metals based alloys against alkali metals have been inputted in DFW of PNC site. The DFW system and the network situation around it have been improved to retrieve distributed database by using Internet. The WWW server has been set in DFW machine for client-server system and user's interface has been developed in order to retrieve the database through WWW browser. The DFW server machine of PNC has been set outside of seculity system called firewall for access from other organizations directly, and the local area network of DFW (DFW-LAN) has been constructed to be possible to use and maintain DFW system through the PNC main network. This consists of some personal computers, which play part in preparation, input and analysis of database, instead of engineering workstation. These improvements have brought more effective value to DFW as a advanced material database system.

This analysis program code STEDFAST; Space, TErrestrial and Deep sea FAST reactor gas tubine system; is used to get the adequate values of system parameters on fast reactor gas turbine power generation systems used as power sources for deep sea, space and terrestrial cogeneration. Characteristics of the code are as follows. Objective systems of the code are a deep sea, a space and a terrestrial reactors. Primary coolants of the systems are NaK, Na, Pb and Li. Secondary coolant is the mixture gas of He and Xe. The ratio of He and Xe is arbitrary. Modeling of components in the systems was performed so that detailed modeling might be capable in future and that a transient analytical code could be easily made by using the code. A progra㎜ing language is MAC-FORTRAN. The code can be easily used in a personal computer. The code made possible instant calculation of various state values in a Brayton cycle, understanding the effects of many parameters on thermal efficiency and finding the most adequate values of the parameters. From now on, detailed modeling of the components will be performed. After that, the transient program code will be made.

There is much data available from irradiation tests on various electrical devices and materials simulating conditions found in nuclear plants. This data is very helpful for selecting the components to be used in unclear plant and for equipment design. A data base has been designed to provide easy acquisition and utilization of the test data. Basic items (target user, scope for collecting data, etc.), qualifications (purpose, function, etc.) and input data sheets have been considered in the design of the data base architecture. A prototype data base system architecture has been designed based on these considerations. After improvement and debugging of the prototype system, irradiation data from tests on semiconductors and polymers were entered into the data base using the data sheets. The data base architecture is designed to be simple so that beginners can easily use it. This system has about 1000 electronic equipments data and about 500 polymers data as of July, 1993. Radiation resistance of electronic equipment is now being evaluated using the data base system. Further improvements and rssolution of problems will be made so the data base system can provide optimum support to the design of equipment used in radiation anvironments.
